URBAN PLANNING FOR HLEMMUR SQUARE

About: A new urban planning for Hlemmur square and surroundings that supersedes two older plans for the area. The main subject of the planning was to expand Hlemmur square by limiting access by private cars and controlling car traffic in nearby streets.

The goal is to strengthen Hlemmur square as a main traffic point for public transportation and provide a frame for a future outdoor market and street cafés. The planning area is approximately 130 ha in downtown Reykjavík, with Hlemmur square in the center. The main themes of the planning is the expansion of the square, traffic control and the planning terms for two perimeter blocks next to the square.
